E que a GNR for chamada para expulsar os activistas.Na introdução de José Rodrigues dos Santos falou-se em 2 hectares destruídos, que o movimento é recém formado, e que o proprietário vai apresentar queixa.

Action of civil disobedience against the first transgenic field in the GMO Free Zone of the Algarve
On the 17th of august the “Movimento Verde Eufémia” will go into action of civil disobedience, aiming at the first transgenic field in the GMO Free Zone of the Algarve. We will go in the actual mowing of the crop. Our purpose is to re-establish the democratic, moral and ecological order, which is constantly undermined by the policies of the European Commission and the Portuguese government.
This year the first GMO field ever has been planted in the Algarve Region in Portugal. Already years before the planting of his GM corn there has been strong opposition from civil society against the cultivation of GMOs in the Algarve. This includes social and environmental organizations, farmers and a public opinion that is in general against the cultivation and consumption of GM crops. Also from the political field opposition was made. As a result the Algarve was the first GMO free zone in Portugal declared by the Junta Metropolitana do Algarve already in 2004. On the level of the municipalities over time motions have been passed rejecting the cultivation of GM crops on their territory.
The arguments against GMOs are situated on different levels. For the consumer, the few independent studies that were carried out, indicate that they can induce allergic reactions, cancer and other long term negative effects, which have not been studied profoundly yet. Introducing GM crops in agriculture produces effects that are irreversible. The modified genes quickly start appearing in other crops, on other field and in other species, a process which is impossible to prevent. Besides that the cultivation of transgenic may induce cumulative effects, since the appearance of weed resistant to herbicides and insects resistant to insecticides until the death of organisms that do not form any danger to the agricultural crops, going along with the appearance of multiple forms of ecological and instabilities. The major study about the effects of transgenic in the environment as published by the British government in 2003. It came to the conclusion that cultivating GMOs is a lot worse to wild life than conventional agriculture. North-American farmers that chose to cultivate GMOs already understood the disadvantages: higher expenses on seeds, more consumption of pesticides, closing international (and even local) markets, products that are less profitable because they are GMOs. Because of genetic contamination, biological farmers are forced to emigrate or change profession. Insurance companies are not willing to secure transgenic cultures because of the high risks involved. Lloyds, one of the major insurance companies allocated GMOs in the same financial risk level as acts of terrorism. The use of GMOs implies that farmers are forbidden to use second generation seeds produced by their own crop. This is an assertion for the seed selling companies to continue their business the next year. Already tens of farmers in the US have already been convicted in tribunal, having used second generation seeds without authorization.
Despite the strong opposition within layers of civil society and from local authorities against GMOs the policies of the Portuguese Government and the European Commission constantly disrespect the moral and democratic right of those opposing actors to ban GMOs from their fields and their plates.
For this reason an informal group of peasants, ecologists and concerned citizens have gathered to take direct action with the aim to re-establish the democratic, moral and ecological order. The movement that we are now starting will go under the name “Movimento Verde Eufémia”, in homage to the peasant struggle against the former Portuguese fascist regime.
The struggle of Caterina Eufémia and the peasant movement of which she was part aimed at defending the rights and the well-being of peasant communities. Our movement will continue this struggle in the context of new appearing threats, namely the agro-biotechnology sector and their powerful lobby.
On the 17th of august we will take action of civil disobedience, mowing the first GM field in the Algarve, located near the city of Silves with the purpose of keeping the Algarve a GMO free region. With this action we will exercise the right according to Article 66 of the constitution… The mowing will be supported by a parade to provide visibility to the action and will be with music, theatre and other artistic and political expressions. While this type of action, involving the mowing of a GM field, will be happening for the first time in Portugal, it will certainly not be an isolated case in Europe. Other groups have been mowing GM fields in several EU countries already. With this action we will follow their example to safeguard GMO Free Zones all over Europe.
We would like to state that we intent no harm to the farmer who for one or another reason chose to cultivate GM crop. Therefore, we propose the farmer to convert to organic farming. For this we offer organic corn seed for the area that is now being planted with GM corn.
We call upon associations within civil society and all concerned citizens to join this civil disobedience movement by mowing existing GM crops in the country. We want Portugal free of GMOs!
We invite the press and all interested people to be present at the meeting point just before the action.
Acção de desobediência civil contra o primeiro campo transgénico na Zona Livre de Transgénicos do Algarve
A 17 de Agosto o “Movimento Verde Eufémia” irá realizar uma acção de desobediência civil que visa o primeiro campo transgénico na Zona Livre de Transgénicos do Algarve, no qual irá efectivamente realizar-se um corte da plantação. O nosso objectivo é restabelecer a ordem ecológica, moral e democrática, que tem sido constantemente minada pelas políticas da Comissão Europeia e do governo português.
Este ano foi plantado o primeiro campo de sempre de OGMs da região do Algarve, em Portugal. Anos antes desta plantação de milho transgénico houve já uma forte oposição por parte da sociedade civil perante a plantação de OGMs no Algarve, que incluiu organizações sociais e ambientais, agricultores e a opinião pública que é, em geral, contra o cultivo e consumo de produtos transgénicos. Igualmente a oposição política esteve contra. Daí resultou que o Algarve se tornou em 2004 na primeira região em Portugal livre de OGMs, declarada pela Junta Metropolitana do Algarve. Os municípios têm aliás rejeitado sucessivamente ao longo dos tempos a plantação de OGMs nas regiões sob a sua alçada.
Os argumentos contra os OGMs são de vária ordem: para o consumidor, os poucos estudos independentes efectuados indicam que podem produzir reacções alérgicas, cancro e outros efeitos negativos a longo prazo que ainda não foram estudados aprofundadamente. Introduzir a culturas de OGMs na agricultura tem efeitos irreversíveis. Os genes modificados rapidamente aparecem noutras culturas, noutros campos e noutras espécies, processo que é impossível de prevenir. Além disso, o cultivo de transgénicos pode induzir efeitos cumulativos: desde o aparecimento de ervas daninhas resistentes a herbicidas e insectos resistentes a insecticidas, até à morte de organismos que não representam qualquer prejuízo agrícola, passando pelo aparecimento de múltiplas formas de desequilíbrio e instabilidade ecológica. O maior estudo sobre o efeito dos OGMs no ambiente foi publicado em 2003 pelo governo britânico: chegou à conclusão que cultivar OGMs é bem pior para a vida selvagem do que a agricultura convencional. Os agricultores norte-americanos que optaram por cultivar transgénicos já se aperceberam das desvantagens: maior despesa com sementes, maior consumo de pesticidas, mercados internacionais (e até locais) que se fecham, produtos que valem menos porque são OGMs. Quanto aos agricultores biológicos, por causa da contaminação a que são sujeitos, acabam por ser forçados a emigrar ou mudar de ramo. E os maiores especialistas de risco, as companhias de seguros, já avisaram alto e bom som que não fazem seguros às culturas transgénicas – a Lloyds, uma das maiores seguradoras do mundo, coloca os OGMs na mesma categoria, do ponto de vista financeiro, que os actos de terrorismo. O uso de OGMs implica que os agricultores são proibidos de utilizar as sementes de segunda geração das suas culturas. Isto constitui uma garantia para as empresas que vendem sementes, de que continuam o seu negócio no ano seguinte. Nos EUA, dezenas de agricultores foram condenados em tribunal por terem semeado sementes de segunda geração sem autorização.
Apesar da forte oposição da sociedade civil e das autoridades locais contra os OGMs, as políticas do Governo Português e da Comissão Europeia desrespeitam constantemente o direito moral e democrático desses agentes opositores a banir os OGMs dos seus campos e dos seus pratos.
Por estas razões, um grupo informal de pequenos agricultores, ecologistas e cidadãos preocupados juntou-se para agir directamente com o propósito de restabelecer a ordem democrática, moral e ecológica. O movimento que agora começamos terá o nome de “Movimento Verde Eufémia”, em homenagem à luta dos trabalhadores contra a política de agricultura fascista portuguesa.
A luta de Catarina Eufémia e a luta dos trabalhadores de que tomou parte teve como objectivo defender os direitos e bem-estar das comunidades de trabalhadores. O nosso movimento continuará esta luta no contexto de novas ameaças, como o sector agro-tecnológico e o seu poderoso lobby.
A 17 de Agosto vamos agir com desobediência civil, fazendo a ceifa do primeiro campo de OGMs no Algarve, localizado perto da cidade de Silves, com o propósito de manter o Algarve uma região livre de OGMs. Com esta acção, exerceremos o direito à resistência, segundo o artigo 21 da Constituição. A ceifa será acompanhada por um desfile para dar visibilidade à acção, com música, teatro e outras expressões artísticas e políticas. Apesar deste tipo de acção da ceifa de um campo de OGMs, este não será um acto isolado na Europa. Outros grupos têm já ceifado campos de OGMs em vários países da UE. Esta acção irá seguir-lhes o exemplo e garantir as Zonas Livres de OGMs por toda a Europa.
Gostaríamos de manifestar que não temos qualquer intenção contra o agricultor que, por uma ou outra razão, escolheu cultivar culturas OGMs. Assim, propomos ao agricultor que se converta ao cultivo orgânico. Para tal oferecemos sementes de milho para a área que está agora plantada com milho OGM.
Apelamos a associações civis e a todos os cidadãos preocupados que se juntem a este movimento de desobediência civil, removendo as culturas OGMs que existem no país. Queremos Portugal livre de OGMs.
Convidamos a imprensa e todos os interessados a estarem presentes no ponto de encontro, imediatamente antes da acção.
